Eight teachers in math, science, and social studies at NTHS will be offering a new way for students to demonstrate proficiency in their coursework and potentially improve their course grade. These teachers are offering students the opportunity to apply for a grade review if their CST score indicates a higher level of proficiency than their end of course grade. English is not currently offering this opportunity because writing is a central component of English course grades but is not assessed on the CST. Students may submit an application for grade review in the fall when CST scores are in. At that time teachers will assess the student's level of proficiency taking into consideration their performance throughout the course as well as their performance on the CST and will determine whether a grade change is appropriate.

Guidelines: In an effort to recognize student performance on the end of year CST tests as additional data regarding student’s mastery of content standards, I am willing to take student performance on these tests into consideration when their grade does not reflect a level of proficiency demonstrated by CST performance. Therefore, if a student earned a D or F in the coursework for a class but scored proficient or advanced on the CST, I will consider a grade change to a C, which reflects proficiency. Because course grades reflect proficiency in coursework beyond what can be demonstrated on a multiple choice test, grades will not be changed to A’s or B’s.
